Koenigsegg Regera goes official with ‘way over 1500 HP’, production limited to 80 examples
Koenigsegg has officially revealed the Regera megacar, sharing all the juicy details about the model.
The Regera name is the Swedish word for “reign” – “a suitable name for a machine that offers a never seen before combination of power, responsiveness and luxury - creating a true Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde persona”.
The heart and soul of the vehicle is the so-called Koenigsegg Direct Drive system that combines a 5.0-liter V8 engine with three electric motors for a total output of “way over 1500 HP”. The technology replaces the traditional transmission and creates direct drive to rear axle from the combustion engine without the need of multitude gears or other traditional types of variable transmissions. When traveling on the highway, for example, the KDD reduces drivetrain losses by over 50%, compared to traditional transmissions or CVTs.
The system features three electric motors – one on each rear wheel for an electric direct drive and one on the crankshaft, giving torque-fill, electrical generation and starter motor functionality. Koenigsegg says this is “the most powerful electrical motor set-up in production car history”. The electric motors are powered by a 9.27 kWh, 620 Volt battery pack.
The complete KDD system adds 88 kg (194 lbs) to the Regera’s total weight which stands at 1,420 kg (3,131 lbs). The car has “almost triple as many electric Bhp (700 Bhp) and over 300 Bhp more than its closest hybrid rival”.
The preliminary acceleration times were confirmed by the manufacturer. So, the 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) acceleration takes 2.8 seconds, 150-250 km/h (93-155 mph) takes 3.2 seconds, while the 0-400 km/h (0-250 mph) sprint is performed in only 20 seconds.
In addition to the KDD system, the Regera also features “the world’s first fully foldable, active, top-mounted rear wing”, Akrapovic exhaust system and is the first car in the world that operates all body closures completely automatically. These operations can be controlled from a smartphone, “truly turning the Regera into a transformer”.
The Regera will be handcrafted in only 80 examples, a number that symbolizes "the principle of domination, control and achievement in Pythagorean Numerology".
