2016 Hyundai Sonata Plug-in Hybrid charges up the Motor City

Hyundai has unveiled the 2016 Sonata Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) at the North American International Auto Show.

 

Despite looking instantly recognizable, the car has a number of aerodynamic styling tweaks including modified bumpers, revised fenders and an updated grille. The hybrid also has restyled lighting units, aerodynamic wheels and additional chrome trim.

 

Interior changes are limited but include a revised instrument cluster and a dashboard-mounted charge indicator that makes it easy to see the state battery's status from outside the vehicle.

 

Power is provided by a plug-in hybrid powertrain that consists of a 2.0-liter GDI four-cylinder engine, a 9.8 kWh lithium-polymer battery and a six-speed automatic transmission with an integrated electric motor. This enables the car to produce a combined maximum output of 202 bhp (150 kW) and travel up to 22 miles (35.4 km) on electricity alone.

 

In terms of fuel efficiency, the model is expected to return 38 mpg city / 43 mpg highway / 40 mpg combined and 93 MPGe combined in EV mode.

 

When the battery is depleted, it can be charged in 2.5 hours with a 240V Level 2 charger or five hours using a standard 120V outlet.

 

The Sonata Plug-in Hybrid will go on sale later this year and be available in California, Connecticut, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Rhode Island and Vermont. Pricing will be announced closer to launch but Hyundai says the car will be eligible for thousands of dollars worth of government tax credits.
