Nissan Z to offer a turbocharged four-cylinder hybrid engine
Nissan’s corporate vice president recently hinted the 370Z successor could be offered with multiple engines and a new report is indicating one of them could be a hybridized four-cylinder.
According to Japan's Best Car Magazine, the next-generation model will be launched initially as a convertible with an eco-friendly engine.
Details are limited but sources say the model will use a Mercedes-sourced 2.0-liter four-cylinder and an electric motor that is sandwiched between the engine and a seven-speed automatic transmission. This setup will reportedly enable the car to produce 247 bhp (184 kW) and 350 Nm (258 lb-ft of torque. This would make the model significantly less powerful the 370Z but it could enable the car to return 20 km/L (5L/100km / 47 mpg US / 56.4 mpg UK).
The hybrid variant is designed to appeal to European and Japanese customers but Americans will reportedly get a high-performance variant that uses a Mercedes-sourced 3.0-liter V6.
The magazine goes on to say the model will be significantly cheaper than the 370Z and could adopt a targa top to help reduce costs.
