Nissan says second-gen Leaf will have a 249-mile range
Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn has announced the second generation Leaf will offer a maximum range of 249 miles (400 km).
The last report concerning Nissan's second-gen Leaf dates back to late August when we heard the electric vehicle will offer an increase in range from the current 84 miles (135 km) to around 186 miles (299 km). However, the company's CEO Carlos Ghosn said during a Japanese TV program the car will actually be able to cover 249 miles (400 km) before running out of juice.
We weren't able to find the original source of the information but Tokyo-based Daily Kanban says they saw the interview and talked to a Nissan engineer who specified the model "could be no more than one model cycle away" so expect a launch in a couple of years, likely in 2016 when the second generation Leaf is programmed to come out.
Chances are Nissan will decide to sell the Leaf with more than just one battery packs so we assume the quoted 249-mile range will be applicable only for the largest battery available. Regardless of battery size, the 2016 Leaf is bound to receive a more conventional styling, with a chromed "V" in the front grille and blacked out pillars.
