Lexus RC F 5.0 V8 engine detailed, generates 471 bhp
Lexus has released additional information about its V8 petrol engine that powers the RC F sports coupe.
The 4,969 cc 32-valve unit has evolved from the engine featured in the previous IS F model and the company says comprehensive changes have been made. Maximum power has been raised by 12 per cent or 54 bhp (40 kW) to 471 bhp (351 kW). The rev limit has also been increased from 6,800 to 7,300rpm. Lexus also explains the higher, 12.3:1 compression ratio boosts torque across the entire rev range, with maximum output rising to 530 Nm (390 lb-ft), available from 4,800 to 5,600rpm.
Most of the engine’s components are new, including intake, throttle body, cylinder heard, the D-4S injection system, pistons, connecting rod, crankshaft and the VVT-i valve timing. The V8 uses titanium inlet and exhaust valves, new high-strength forged connecting rods and new main-bearing materials. Interestingly, it switches to the more fuel-efficient Atkinson cycle when operating at cruising speeds, reverting to the Otto cycle at higher revs.
As we have previously reported, the acceleration of the RC F from 0 to 100 km/h (0-62 mph) takes 4.5 seconds, while the top speed is electronically governed at 270 km/h (168 mph). The 400 m (1/4 mile) sprint from standstill takes 12.5 seconds.
