All-electric Range Rover considered to rival Tesla Model X

A new report indicates Land Rover is working on a pure electric Range Rover model to compete with the forthcoming Tesla Model X.

 

Although the Model X isn't yet commercially available, it seems automakers are already working on models to directly compete with Tesla's all-electric SUV which will be out next fall. Land Rover will probably be one of the first to introduce a pure electric high-riding vehicle which is believed to be more than just an electric version of the regular Range Rover.

 

The model in question will reportedly have a lower roofline and will be more of a crossover to provide a sleeker design, characteristics already hinted by the company's design chief Gerry McGovern who said they are considering a Range Rover expansion with "incredibly luxurious, low-slung" models. The pure electric Range Rover will be primarily designed for on-road use but it will still be able to go off-road thanks to its height-adjustable air suspension.

 

Autocar is estimating the starting price will be of at least ￡90,000 and the electric Range Rover will have more standard equipment compared to the Model X. There's no word about a launch date but chances are it won't come out sooner than 2017.
