2015 Chrysler 300 / 300 SRT Spied
Two versions of Chrysler’s flagship 300 sedan, both caught rumbling around Detroit with baggy covers on their front fascias, hoods, and rear ends. The camouflage is designed to obscure the changes Chrysler has in store as part of a 2015 model-year refresh. The car wearing light-finished multispoke aluminum wheels is a regular 300—either a 300C or a 300S—and the 300 rolling on dark-colored five-spoke wheels appears to be the high-performance 300 SRT model.
The 2015 Chrysler 300 will continue to be built on the company’s full-size LX platform with no major changes. Otherwise, the 300 looks to be getting a very mild cosmetic update, with the regular 300 prototype pictured here gaining a dark mesh grille with an inset winged logo, redesigned front and rear fascias, and new lighting all the way around.
The high-performance 300 SRT model sits on a lowered suspension and gets a tall decklid spoiler. Under the camouflage, we can make out a unique fascia with a wire-mesh grille, darkened headlamps, and what’s likely an SRT badge hiding under a square piece of squiggle wrap. The wheel wells are filled with large five-spoke pieces that frame bright-red Brembo brake calipers and large-diameter slotted discs. Don’t get your hopes up that the 707-hp supercharged Hellcat V-8 might be lurking under the hood; while that engine will power a new super Charger, the hi-po Dodge’s huge six-piston front and four-piston rear brakes would also be here if that were the case. But those big tailpipes—and our spy shooter’s account of “thunder” erupting when the driver floored it—suggest that the standard SRT 6.4-liter Hemi V-8 is present and accounted for.
Not much changed under the Charger’s hood when it was refreshed for 2015, and we expect Chrysler to use the same carry-over approach for the 2015 300. If the Charger’s and current 300’s powertrain programs are anything to go by, the base 300 will again use Chrysler’s 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 with 292 horses and 260 lb-ft of torque. A 5.7-liter Hemi V-8 making 370 ponies and 395 lb-ft of torque will be optional, and both engines will be mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission. Hopefully, the transmission gains the more natural-feeling electronic shifter we recently experienced in the 2015 Challenger SXT; the current 300’s T-shaped electronic lever lacks precision, making it easy to select the wrong gear. Rear-wheel drive will be standard, with all-wheel drive an option for non-SRT 300s.
As mentioned, expect the SRT—wherever it’s sold—to have the 6.4-liter Hemi V-8, perhaps with the same 15-horsepower and 5-lb-ft gains seen in the 2015 Challenger SRT 392 coupe. The current 300 SRT has 470 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque.
The 2015 Chrysler 300 will appear this fall, likely at the 2014 L.A. auto show. Pricing should remain close to the $31,990–$50,895 Chrysler charges for the 2014 300.
