2019 Nissan Altima Arrives In New York With Sharper Styling, New Engines
Nissan has unveiled the high-tech, sixth-generation Nissan Altima at the New York Auto Show. The latest version of the company's midsize sedan offers single-lane, semi-autonomous capability, and all-wheel drive is available for the first time in the model's history.
The 2019 Altima features a new design that takes direct inspiration from the Vmotion 2.0 concept. The biggest changes are in front where Nissan fits a low-slung nose, which gives the sedan a sharp, aerodynamic face. Headlights, with available LEDs, follow the sharp crease that lead down the shoulders and to the rear of the vehicle. The concept's sharp edges aren't quite as evident at the back, but the design is still far more angular than the current Altima. The sedan's latest generation is an inch (2.54 centimeters) longer, 0.9 inches (2.29 cm) wider, and 1.1 inches (2.79 cm) lower. The wheelbase grows by 1.9 inches (4.83 cm).
The Altima is available with two engines. The base unit is a thoroughly revised 2.5-liter four-cylinder that produces 188 horsepower (140 kilowatts) and 180 pound-feet (244 Newton-meters) – versus 179 hp (134 kW) and 177 lb-ft (240 Nm) from the existing mill. Nissan's variable-compression 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder replaces the existing V6. It produces 248 hp (185 kW) and 273 lb-ft (370 Nm), and the company claims there's a big boost in fuel economy, too. Regardless of engine choice, the Altima comes with a CVT transmission. The 2.5-liter comes standard with front-wheel drive, but all-wheel drive is an option.
The 2.0-liter turbo comes exclusively with front-wheel drive. Inside, the Altima mixes a seven-inch driver assist display and an eight-inch infotainment screen. The system supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Functions like unlocking the doors or starting the engine are even accessible through a compatible Apple Watch and Android Wear device.
The Altima will go on sale in the United States this fall, and it'll be available in S, SR, SV, SL, and Platinum trims. Pricing details will come closer to launch.
