Hot Hybrids: Mercedes Launches Electrified AMG 53 Range
One of the highlights of the 2019 Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class is its new mild hybrid powertrain. The 3.0-liter turbocharged straight-six engine comes with an "EQ Boost" setup, which uses a small electric motor to provide additional thrust, and to run the car's 48-volt electrical system.
Launching later this year on the CLS-Class sedan, E-Class coupe, and E-Class convertible, the AMG 53 cars use this same 3.0-liter inline-six engine, with greater turbo boost to increase overall output. The standard CLS450 produces 362 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque with this engine, plus an additional 21 hp and 184 lb-ft from the electric motor. But in the CLS53, output numbers are increased to 429 hp and 384 lb-ft, though the electric motor's ratings are unchanged. Mercedes says the CLS53 will sprint to 60 miles per hour in just 4.4 seconds.
As for the E-Class models, the AMG E53 represents a healthy increase in power over the E400's 329 hp and 354 lb-ft of torque. Hell, it even outshines the 396-hp AMG E43 sedan. It's also the first time Mercedes is offering a full AMG version of the E-Class Coupe and Cabriolet.
The AMG 53 models all use a nine-speed dual-clutch transmission and send power to the ground via Mercedes' 4Matic+ all-wheel-drive system, which can run in full rear-drive mode for better efficiency (sorry, no Drift Mode here). AMG CLS53 models also get a number of driver assistance technologies carried down from the flagship S-Class, including Active Braking Assist, Active Steering Assist, Active Speed Limit Assist, adaptive cruise control, and many others. All AMG 53 cars get an air suspension, with Comfort, Sport, and Sport+ settings built into the cars' Dynamic Select drive modes.
AMG 53 models get redesigned front bumpers, and the twin-blade radiator is finished in silver chrome, something Mercedes says is normally reserved for V8 AMG models. Dual round tailpipes out back are a new design cue, as well.
