BMW 6 Series GT engine, equipment details surface early
Caught on camera just a few days ago, the 6 Series GT is back in the news as someone close to BMW has decided to spill the beans on what’s shaping up to be a sleeker replacement for the bulky 5 Series GT. It’s going to be available with an assortment of turbocharged gasoline engines powering the 630i, 640i, and the M650i xDrive, with the latter serving as the most powerful gasoline version thanks to a biturbo 4.4-liter V8 taken from the new M550i xDrive. In the sedan, it delivers 462 horsepower (340 kilowatts) and 479 pound-feet (650 Newton-meters) of torque to an all-wheel drive layout.
On the diesel side, buyers will get to pick from 620d and 630d models, as well as the M650d xDrive equipped with an inline-six 3.0-liter quad turbo oil burner codenamed “B57” like in the 750d where it pumps out 394 hp (294 kW) and 560 lb-ft (760 Nm).
To provide even more variety in the powertrain area, BMW is expected to roll out plug-in hybrid derivatives of the 6 Series GT set to receive the 630e, 640e, and 650e iPerformance monikers. The 630e will couple a turbocharged 2.0-liter gasoline engine with an electric motor for a combined output of 252 hp (185 kW) and 310 lb-ft (420 Nm) identical to the latest 530e. The latter uses a 9.2-kWh lithium-ion battery providing enough energy for 28 miles (45 kilometers) of electric range.
Hardly a surprise, the 5 Series GT’s successor will be available at an additional cost with an M Sport Package in the same vein as the one seen on the new 5 Series Sedan. BMW will allegedly have two air suspensions to offer and one of them will apparently be called “Executive Drive,” which judging by its moniker will have the softest setup possible. Also at an additional cost, the new Gran Turismo from Bavaria will be offered with rear-wheel steering as well as with a remote parking function activated by simply pressing the key from outside the vehicle to enable the 6 Series GT do all the work in a tight parking space or garage.
Details about the model’s official reveal have not been disclosed, but it will likely be introduced in the second half of next year. Our money is on the Frankfurt Motor Show in September, with sales to kick off either by the end of 2017 or early 2018.
