Opel Ampera-e aka Chevy Bolt to make world debut in Paris

The Rüsselsheim-based marque is using some big words to describe the Ampera-e, saying that it has what it takes to ‘revolutionize electromobility’ at the forthcoming car show in France. In addition, the new entry in Opel’s EV range will have ‘acceleration and overtaking ability like a sportscar.’

 

Motivation will be provided by the same electric motor with 200 horsepower (150 kilowatts) and an instant torque of 266 pound-feet (360 Newton-meters). Opel says the hardware will enable the Ampera-e to be on par in terms of performance with the company’s hotter OPC-badged models.

 

Opel says its upcoming EV will run to 31 mph (50 kph) in just 3.2 seconds and will need just 4.5 seconds to cover the sprint from 80 to 120 kph (50 to 75 mph) before maxing out at 93 mph (150 kph).

 

But let’s face it, people won’t buy the Ampera-e for its acceleration or top speed, they’ll get the car for its long range. While Opel isn’t saying for how long the 60-kWh lithium-ion battery pack will last, we do know in the 2017 Chevy Bolt it is going to provide enough juice for more than 200 miles (322 km).

 

According to a report from February, the Ampera-e won’t actually be manufactured by Opel. Instead, the model is expected to be produced at GM’s Orion factory near Detroit and share the assembly line with the Bolt.
