UK pricing and specifications for the innovative Hyundai Ioniq have been announced, with a starting point of ￡19,995. It is the first car to be offered with a choice of petrol-electric hybrid, pure-electric or, from 2017, plug-in hybrid drivetrains.
The Ioniq Hybrid is powered by a 1.6-litre, naturally-aspirated petrol engine teamed with a lithium-ion battery pack. The system produces a total of 139 horsepower and 195 pound-feet of torque, sent to the front wheels through a six-speed dual-clutch gearbox. Depending on spec, Hyundai quotes combined fuel economy of as much as 83.1 miles per gallon, with CO2 emissions of 79 g/km. Performance is respectable too, with 0-62 miles per hour passing in 10.8 seconds and a top speed of 115 mph.
The Ioniq Electric, meanwhile, produces 117 hp and 218 lb-ft of torque from a 28 kWh battery pack, enough for a 0-62 mph time of 9.9 seconds in Sport mode, and a top speed of 103 mph. More relevantly, Hyundai claims a range of 174 miles and that an 80% charge takes just 33 minutes from a public 50 kW rapid charger.
That ￡19,995 starting price buys a Hybrid SE model which comes with 15 inch alloy wheels, DAB and Bluetooth, rear parking camera, lane keep assist, and autonomous emergency braking. It's an aggressive price, too, a whopping ￡3,300 less than a base-spec Toyota Prius.
Premium spec adds heated seats and steering wheel, sat nav, and smartphone connectivity for ￡21,795, and top-grade Premium SE gets leather seats with ventilation, electric driver's seat with memory, and extra driving aids for ￡23,595.
Prices for the Ioniq Electric start at ￡28,995 at Premium grade. Again, that undercuts the base-spec 30 kWh Nissan Leaf, which has only a marginally better range and is nowhere near as well equipped. The top-spec Premium SE is ￡30,795; both are expected to be eligible for a ￡4,500 government grant.
